Merry Ludachristmas!

I meant to blog about this Led Zepplin business earlier in the week, but it's sort of old news at this point. (But did you see this: "Supermodel flies into rage at Led Zeppelin concert"--kinda funny.) On Monday, Opie and Anthony were making fun of them, but from the few clips I've seen on the interewebs (most of which have now been taken down--though see here), they rocked. Looking forward to the DVD.

The heretofore unknown to me Gemma Arterton (and not Gemma Atkinson, who I have heard of) may be the new Bond girl. According to this story at Cinematical, she has that "modern look"--which means what exactly? She sort of looks like Juliette Binoche's younger sister, which is good so far as it goes, but I'm having trouble visualizing her as a Bond girl. Bond geeks--whaddya think?

Raphy must be jetlagged. It's hard to believe he doesn't have a thoughtful, carefully crafted view about whether "Bonfire" is one for the ages (or not).

In Raph's absence, I'll note that I'm not sure if Bonfire is one for the ages — but it is, along with Wall Street, a (the?) definitive portrait of a hugely influential place and time.

Wolfe's observations and labels are right on; just last night, watching The Wire, noting the kids doing the "pimp roll." And I suppose it's a classic in the sense that I'm glad I read it at the time and feel no need to go anywhere near it ever again.

Having no idea who that new Bond girl is, I'll reserve judgment.

I am shamed into a response.

Bonfire's allure for me is that it was the first "big" book I read voluntarily---not through school, as an assignment, or otherwise.

Also, it told what felt like a big, and important, story, synthesizing different classes, struggles, and prefessional sectors.

Hoestly, any corrolaries with real persons never occurred to me at the time, or at least I don't recall any character resonating as charictures of real people. I don't recall it being touted as a modern roman a clef.

All that said, I've never re-read it, don't recall taking it off the shelf to look for good passages, or loaned it to anyone. So maybe it's not one for the ages. But I am sure it sure spoke to me when it came out 20 years ago. And it has gotten me to read everything Wolfe's ever written since, and most of what he wrote before.

So, completely changing the subject: has anyone seen When Nietzsche Wept? I saw it over Christmas and liked it, even though I was not especially predisposed to doing so. An especially delectable treat was seeing Lou Salome portrayed by the almost inhumanly beautiful Katheryn Winnick:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0935395/

Naturally, Ms. Winnick is Canadian, following in the proud tracks of the likes of Elisha Cuthbert. Check out her bio, though: she's alo got a third-degree Black Belt in tae kwan do. So, while a Canadian actor may never get a crack at playing James Bond, I am convinced that Katheryn would make an absolutely kick-ass Bond girl.
